The requirements to become a special agent vary depending on the state in which you are applying. To qualify for the position of an Oklahoma special agent, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements: be at least twenty-one (21) years of age, hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, possess a minimum of two years of law enforcement experience with a governmental law enforcement agency, and be a certified CLEET (OSBIAA, 2022). In Florida, to qualify for an Investigative Special Agent position, applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 19 years old, of good moral character, hold and maintain a valid Florida driver's license, possess a high school diploma or GED, and have no felony or misdemeanor convictions related to perjury or false statements (Florida Department of Law Enforcement, 2024). The minimum qualifications include four years of sworn law enforcement experience, with at least two years in sworn criminal investigative roles (Florida Department of Law Enforcement, 2024). The difference between the two is the age requirements to qualify, for Oklahoma one must be at least twenty-one (21) years, and for the FDLE onemust be at least nineteen (19) years. The education requirements differ as well, Oklahoma Requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, while Florida requires a high school diploma or GED. If i were the chief of police i would prefer Oklahoma's job requirements because Oklahoma's requirement for a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university indicates a preference for candidates with a higher level of education. A bachelor's degree can equip candidates with critical thinking skills, analytical abilities, and a broader knowledge base, which are valuable in law enforcement settings, particularly in roles that require problem-solving and decision-making. The age requirement for the FBI is that candidates to be at least 23 years old and enter on duty no later than the day before their 37th birthday, unless they have veteran's preference or federal law enforcement experience (FBI Jobs, 2024). The education requirement for the FBI is like that of Oklahoma's, the FBI requires a bachelor's degree and at least two years of full-time professional work experience (FBI Jobs, 2024).
