Focusing on gym attendance I agree that one could conclude that middle-aged people are more likely to to the gym than older people OR that older people are more likely to go to the gym than middle-aged people. One cannot say that because they are middle-aged they go to the gym more often. One may find a correlation between age and frequency of going to the gym, but one cannot say that age is the reason one goes to the gym. This information though only provides us with how often they visit the gym, and not the length of time in the gym. The original scenario was about exercising less. One would need to take this research a bit further to address the issue of the amount of time spent on exercising. The same setup would still be necessary to try
