In short, the SASSI-3 claims to be an inventory that is a precursor evaluation for substance abuse. This claim falls short for several reasons and is not appropriate for assessing young adult clients presenting problems drinking on campus.

The SASSI-3 sample seems impressive but considering the participants consisted of those government or private practice treatment facilities for various reasons is cause for concern due to the possibility of inflated criterion validity and does not present data on its validity with different populations (Fernandez & Pittenger, 2003). The population used does not reflect those not in a treatments center being treated for psychopathology, and lacks information regarding the person or persons diagnosing the participants (Fernandez & Pittenger, 2003). It makes sense to call this a quick inventory that can assess the need for further treatment, but more research needs to be done to expand its validity with populations not being treated at a facility along with more detailed supporting data.
