1st comment--Professor Markus could have difficulties remembering the names of her students because of proactive interference which is when prior learning disrupts your recall of new information. Also it could be retroactive interference which is the opposite when new learning disrupts you being able to recall old information. Maybe Professor Markus also didn't concentrate when he was trying to remember their names causing him to be unable to enter all the names correctly into his long term memory bank.

2nd comment--Professor Markus could be dealing with the interference theory. Interference theory states that the professor has a lot of other information that is interfering with their ability to remember students names. They have had many students over the years so it would be hard to remember them all. Another reason that they might be having trouble recalling student names is that she didn't concentrate on memorizing the names so the information wasn't entered into her long term memory. Storage decay may be another factor. If the professor learned the students' name at the beginning of class, but didn't use their names again for a few weeks she may not recall them then. Another possibilityat her age may be the onset of dementia.
