respond to this post . Concurrent Engineering (CE) is an integrative process for new product design that foregoes the silos involved with linear engineering. The basic premises of CE is to engage late-stage design functions into early design stages. The advantages of utilizing cross-functional teams in a new product development include increased quality, design, decreases design and change costs, superior product value, to name a few. Swink perfectly describes the numerical benefits that CE can provide, "CE can produce organizational benefits that far exceed the profits associated with any single product. For example, some companies have documented savings in overall product development costs of 20%, reductions in development time of 50%, and reductions in engineering design changes of 45-50%." (Swink, p. 116). I do think the most valuable benefit that CE can provide a firm is an overall legacy of quality and value, think Toyota and Honda, two automotive firms that are synonymous with quality and value.
