Respond to two classmates
Student 1:
My least favorite manager that I have ever worked for was at my first job. In order to effectively run a business, the business needs good management which consists of skills like planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. This manager that I worked with did not have any of these skills. My first job was at a fast-food place and believe it or not was pretty stressful at times. When employees come into work, managers are supposed get the crew together and break down each crew members specific role that they will have for the day. This allows us to run at an effective pace which results in fast service times and happy customers, but when this specific manager was working, there was no plan because she did not communicate with her employees to assign them tasks for the day which resulted in slow service and us being super unorganized. This manager not only was super unorganized and bad at planning but was also super lazy. During the lunch rush, she would randomly just disappear and go to the office and be on her phone and not helping her employees. This issue allowed some of the employees not to care about doing their job effectively because if the manager themselves does not care, why would the employees care? Bad management in the workplace is a serious issue because it allows to the business to not be effective which leads to people losing their jobs and possibly the business shutting down. This manager did not take control the entire time she worked for the business, she did not care what the employees were doing and how effectiveness of the business. At the end of the day, this manager was only working for their paycheck and that was it. This had a big impression on me because I did not like working in an environment like that because I wanted the business to be effective and keep customers happy because no one wants to deal with customers being unsastfied, that's not fun to deal with. This manager ended up getting fired after a couple months of being there, and funny enough I was offered her position a couple weeks later.
Student 2:
In the time that I have been in the hospitality industry, only a small team of managers come to mind when thinking about good managers, they're also the reason I am still currently in the restaurant as well. It's not one individual manager but three who have created a healthy work environment for me and my mental health. Each one is very kind and understanding given any type of circumstance. As we're aware, life situations tend to happen and what I have come to realize that jobs aren't understanding or accommodating to your situation. However, with these managers, I have seen with my co-workers that they extend a lot of patience and kindness towards what's going on. They even say themselves "we know you have a life outside of this job". Along with that is that they are extremely helpful throughout the whole shift and always have full hands on deck to help the servers or guests that need them. Lastly, with the restaurant industry there is always a high turnover rate mainly because of management. With this restaurant, since the managers show understanding and do their best not to burn out the employees which is why they have the lowest turnover rates, which demonstrates as well how much employees enjoy being there by just the management.
