The ideological divide between those who adhere to the left and those who adhere to the right. It is centered on the rights of individuals as well as the power of the government. Beliefs that are held by those on the left are considered liberal in the sense that those who subscribe to these beliefs think that an increased role for the state is advantageous to society. People who hold to the political right believe that individual rights and civil liberties, as well as the role and, most importantly, the power of the government, are of the utmost importance. They also consider the role of the government to be of the utmost importance. They think that this is the best possible scenario for society as a whole. Some examples of an expanded role for the government include entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare, Medicaid, universal healthcare, food stamps, free public education, unemployment benefits, strong environmental laws, and other regulations on industries. The right ideology leans toward supporting market-based solutions to the problems these government programs attempt to address. For instance, promoting a market for healthcare that is more open and driven primarily by consumer choice could be one option to bring down costs. Alternatively, as an alternative to the system of Social Security guaranteed by the government, privately owned retirement accounts such as 401(k) plans.

Throughout the history of the United States, extremist groups on both the right and the left have been a problem. On the other hand, left-wing groups emphasize class struggle and support for people living in Third World countries, while right-wing groups believe in white supremacy and patriotism. These ideologies are antidemocratic; they aim to bring about a revolution and blame one specific group for the nation's ills. In addition, these ideologies attribute all of the nation's problems to that group. They have committed comparable acts of criminal depravity. These acts include bombings, the murder of law enforcement officers, and attacks on government buildings. (Blumberg, 1986).

Even though left-wing politics were first brought to the United States in the 19th century, the country does not currently have any significant left-wing political parties.
