responsible for decision making and impulsivity? Szalavitz states that social support and employment are factors that lead to recovery. (Szalavitz, 2023). Since social and family support, skills building, education and employment are also the strongest factors for reducing poverty, this seems like a carbon-copy, obvious solution for both, intertwined issues. It is critical that our governmental policies support helping people out of poverty. This does not always mean handing out cash, but it could mean handing out a resource to help people complete college or start businesses. Rather than handing out lump sum cash to millions of people, for example, provide a small start-up business to hundreds, along with the training to run such a business. This could have a lasting, generational effect and begin a trajectory of a country who digs itself out of poverty. An MIT economist produced an 11-year study in Bangladesh with 6000 participants to see if people stay poor due to their beliefs and attitudes or due to lack of opportunity. The study found that when very poor participants were given an asset (for example a cow, or $500) such a randomized asset transfer showed that people will use the opportunity to climb out of poverty. The study proved that people stay poor due to lack of opportunity rather than laziness or any other personal attribute
