Revenue and COGS are recorded when refrigeration units are transferred to the freezer division. Bryan’s uses standard costing and all over or under applied costs are closed in COGS at month-end. Inventories, which include WIP and finished goods, are accounted for using a weighted average. Each freezer has the same cost at the end of each month even if it is in COGS, WIP, or finished goods.

Direct materials get added at the start of the process and overhead costs are added throughout the process. All of the overhead costs are fixed and allocated to the identical refrigeration units are based on the number produced. Budgeted production was 50,000 refrigeration units each month with $3,000,000 in direct materials and $10,000,000 in fixed overhead.

In February: 10,000 refrigeration units in finished goods inventory, with a standard cost of $533,000 in direct materials, and $2,128,000 in fixed overhead. The factory starts to produce 57,000 refrigeration units and completes 53,000. The remaining 4,000 units are 25% through the production process. 61,000 units are sold during the month. Actual production costs are $12,900,000 with $3,100,000 in direct materials and $9,800,000 in fixed overhead.
