Question
Reverse osmosis membrane system is used to desalinize sea water to produce pure water (that is 500 ppm salt in water) and a brine waste
Reverse osmosis membrane system is used to desalinize sea water to produce pure water (that is 500 ppm salt in water) and a brine waste stream, that is 5.25 % salt. The feed contains 3.1% salt in water. The portion of the brine leaving the reverse osmosis membrane is recycled back to mix with the feed water to produce a solution that is 4.0 % salt which is sent to the membrane. We would like to produce 1000 kg/hr of the 500 ppm salt solution.
a. Draw and label process flow diagram
b. Identify the systems for this process where you can write mass balances (i.e. Overall Process)
c. Determine the rate of waste brine removed from the process. d. Determine rate of feedwater to the process
e. The fraction of brine leaving the reverse osmosis membrane that is recycled.
