Review each of the corresponding scenarios and state at least 2 aspects of a token economy that are being correctly implemented. Then, state at least 2 aspects that are not being implemented correctly, as well as what you would do differently to correct these aspects.
Critique the Token Economy Instructions: Critique the following procedure by identifying any guidelines for designing and implementing token economies that are being followed and any guidelines that are not being followed. Provide specific recommendations for addressing any of the guidelines that are not being followed. Scenario Adrian is a BCBA who works for an organization that provides supported employment services to adults with disabilities. One of Adrian's new clients, a 29-year-old man with mild intellectual disability, has begun a vocational training program in preparation for employment at one of the local businesses. The client currently attends the program for 4 hours each day with a long-term goal of gradually increasing this duration to 8 hours. The client's vocational teacher has reported that the client is having a hard time staying on task and following instructions during the day, taking 2-6 breaks each hour, sometimes up to 20 minutes each. These breaks are in addition to the 15-minute breaks all clients in the vocational training program receive at the top of each hour. When asked, the client states that he wants to go to the vocational training program and really wants to have his own job and his own money, but he gets bored easily and loses motivation to do-any work. The client does not have any physical concerns and does not have any additional diagnoses that may affect his ability to work (e.g., ADHD). In an attempt to help the client further develop some work persistence and increase the amount of time spent working, Adrian decides to implement a token system to reinforce working. The client currently has an aide with him at the vocational training program to provide assistance as needed. The token system involves the aide providing the client with a token any time he does really well at the vocational program. Adrian leaves the criteria for earning a token intentionally vauage to allow the aide to provide tokens for a wide range of behaviors since "good work" can take a variety of forms and may look different depending on what he is working on. Whenever the client receives at least 20 tokens during his 4 hours at the vocational training program (which equates to approximately 5 tokens per hour), he will be able to have access to a special activity of his choice once he gets back to his group home, as long as the thing he picks is within reason and something that is actually available. The client's tokens are small cartoon stickers of baseball players as baseball is one of the client's favorite activities. Each time the client does something that the aide feels is worthy of a token, the aide will place one sticker on a piece of paper. At the end of the 4 hours of the vocational training program, the aide will count up the number of stickers the client has received and inform Adrian. This will be the first time the client has ever receive a system like this before One the first day the new token system is implemented, Adrian spends a couple of minutes telling the aide how to implement the token economy, and then briefly explains the new contingency to the client, letting him know how many stickers he needs to get his reinforcer. After 3 weeks of implementing the token system, however, the client has only received his reinforcer twice, and on one of those occasions he had to pick something else as the activity he wanted wasn't available that day. The client is receiving on average about 8 tokens during his 4 hours in the vocational training program, and the vocational teacher reports that there hasn't been much change in the client's on-task behavior or motivation while at the program. Some of the support staff at the group home also report that the client has been more frustrated and update in the last couple of weeks and generally doesn't seem as happy has he used to.
