Arturo, a 26-year-old Latino male, entered counseling at a community mental health center complaining of feelings of anger, anxiety, and foreboding. He had been through a series of unsuccessful relationships over the previous 2 years and disliked his job. He was particularly adamant about the last point, as he had been employed in his father's restaurant business for the 8 years since graduating from high school, with little hope of taking over the business because of his father's reluctance to retire.Arturo was, infact, angry and embarrassed about even having to seek help, as he felt that this was a sign of weakness, and was worried that other people might find out that he was coming to the center.
The counselor to whom Arturo was assigned began his interactions with Arturo by allowing him to discuss his feelings about the present situation. During these sessions, Arturo realized that he was not very upset about the break-up with his girlfriend, but that his present unhappiness began several months before when his youngest sister was accepted to medical school. He also realized that he had been mildly dissatisfied with working in his father's business for several years. The counselor questioned Arturo about his educational experience and he reported that he had been an outstanding student in high school and had wanted to go on to college. The problem had been that his interests were unfocused at the time. Arturo had opted to go into his father's business because Arturo was concerned about his father's health and none of Arturo's siblings had shown any interest in doing the same.
Arturo realized that he had been unhappy since making this commitment and had harbored resentment about always feeling that he had to please his father. Arturo felt that he always failed to please his father, and would become depressed and angry and depressed. Recently, Arturo had begun drinking excessively after work and showing up for work late. This increased the conflict between his father and him to the point that his father threatened to fire him if he didn't "straighten up." Arturo expressed to the counselor that he felt like a total failure in life who had failed to attain his academic, career, or relationship goal.
