Review the following instructions, and then list the most important qualities you want peers to focus on when they review your Canvas lesson project.
In other words, when your Canvas lesson project is peer reviewed, what qualities should be assessed?
To help you answer that question, we'll refer to a rubric that's commonly used in higher ed. But first, recall that rubrics specify the important qualities of artifacts and performances. Rubrics usually have several broad categories (i.e., general standards), and under each broad category are specific standards. In some cases, these standards may be set by particular organizations. For example, Quality Matters (QM) is an association of higher education and K-12 school members, including Penn State World Campus, that seeks to continually improve online learning and ensure accessibility.
The QM rubric includes these eight General Standards (broad categories) for online courses:
- Course Overview and Introduction: The overall design of the course is made clear to the learner at the beginning of the course.
- Learning Objectives (Competencies): Learning objectives or competencies describe what learners will be able to do upon completion of the course.
- Assessment and Measurement: Assessments are integral to the learning process and are designed to evaluate learner progress in achieving the stated learning objectives or mastering the competencies.
- Instructional Materials: Instructional materials enable learners to achieve stated learning objectives or competencies.
- Learning Activities and Learner Interaction: Course activities facilitate and support learner interaction and engagement. Student to student interaction and student to instructor interaction was provided through the discussion forums. The discussion forum enhanced interaction between all the student participants and the instructor in a group-based setting.
- Course Technology: Course technologies support learners' achievement of course objectives or competencies.
- Learner Support: The course facilitates learner access to institutional support services essential to learner success.
- Accessibility and Usability: The course design reflects a commitment to accessibility and usability for all learners.
- Plus: The course design reflects a commitment to equity and social justiceequity and access, anti-racism orientations and practices, essential literacies, and the mental health and well-being of all individuals across the lifespan.
Read the QM Rubric (6th ed.) Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U9BJwOt_MoOzdhFpodS_gpIGG_PquSan/view?usp=sharing that includes specific standards under each of these eight General Standards. The qualities captured in this rubric are industry standard, and assuring these are in your online lessons and courses will result in higher quality instruction. The QM organization periodically reviews and updates the rubrics to reflect the latest industry standards.
Based on the QM eight standards mentioned above, list the most important qualities you want peers to focus on when they review your Canvas lesson project.
If you manage online learning in your organization, consider how the QM association can support your mission.
