Innovation and entrepreneurial spirit are influenced by leadership theories including entrepreneurial leadership and operational leadership. Entrepreneurial leadership occurs when leaders see new opportunities and take action to move towards those goals (Uhl-Bien et al., 2021). Operational leadership takes the ideas and gets them adopted in the business. Enabling leadership comes into play when there are roadblocks between the two. This is where barriers to the goal are broken down through negotiation and adaptation.

Implicit followership theory involves the effective and ineffective qualities of the follower and the manager's view of the follower (Uhl-Bien et al., 2021). Some prototypical follower traits include being enthusiastic and organized and the manager's view of the same person could include being a team player and being productive. Anti-prototypical followers can be described as rude and arrogant, and a manager's view of the same person could be incompetent and ineffective. Followership is important to the effectiveness of the team to be able to innovate and bring quality work to complete goals whether in a normal business environment or entrepreneurial business environment.
