Reviewing the powers entrusted to Congress via Article 1 Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, Clause 6 stands out to me. Clause 6 covers Congress's powers concerning fighting counterfeit currency. The explicit inclusion of counterfeiting as a federal crime seems more specific than the broader legislative powers. However, it shows the importance the drafters placed on the integrity of currency in forming a new nation. As cases regarding this power have made their way to the U.S. Supreme Court, they have interpreted this Clause to be limited to covering the minting of forged coin. (U.S. Const. art. I, 8, cl. 6, n.d.) Surprisingly, Congressional authority over education is absent in Article 1 Section 8. The Constitution does not explicitly mention education, nor did the Federal Government involve itself. Education was left to the states to manage for much of U.S. history.
