Reynolds number
In each of the following cases, estimate the Reynolds number, and whether or not the flow is turbulent. For some parts, there is more than one Reynolds number, so calculate cases as appropriate. Where there are multiple dimensions, the smaller dimension that defines the flow is usually the appropriate choice (alternatively, use hydraulic diameter for a more correct estimate).
(a) A typical water faucet can fill a 12L container with 20C water in about a minute, and is supplied by a 0.5-inch internal-diameter pipe.
(b) A pump in an engine assembly pumps SAE 30 motor oil through a tube with an inner diameter of 1.9mm. When the engine starts up, the oil is at -10C and the oil has a viscosity of 1.5Pa*s. In continuous operation, the oil is at 80C and the oil has a viscosity of 15mPa*s.
(c) Blood is not a very ideal fluid, but it can be reasonably approximated as a liquid with a viscosity of 10mPa*s. A heart pumps 100mL of blood 60 times a minute, all of which passes through a large artery with a rough diameter of 40mm, and ultimately through 109 capillaries with a rough diameter of 10m.
(d) The round 2cm2 opening on a container of molasses (at 20C) dispenses 125mL in half a minute.
(e) A sports car drives down a highway at 125kmh. It takes an off-ramp at 50kmh and then parks in a lot where the wind is blowing perpendicular to the length of the car at 5kmh.
(f) A squirrel jumps between two branches, covering a distance of 3m in about half a second.
(g) The Mackenzie River discharges 313km3 of water into the Arctic Ocean each year. Near the end of the river, before it opens up into an enormous delta, there is a narrow section where the width is 960m, and the river is 15m deep.
