Rob Gordon owns Championship Vinyl & Stereo in Chicago. He takes great pride in the fact that the stereos he sells achieve high fidelity and truly "rock."A couple weeks ago, Laura came into his establishment.Though Laura is just 17 years old, she looks much older. She told Rob that she wanted to purchase a stereo set-up and picked out the components she favored.Rob drew up a sales agreement. Before signing on the dotted line, Rob asked her if she was over 18.Then he said "You sure look like you're over 21." Laura simply smiled and nodded. She signed the contract which required a $300 deposit and a $50 monthly payment. Laura put down the $300, and left with the stereo equipment. Two short weeks later Laura decided that she wanted out of the contract. Her new boyfriend Ian told her that the turntable was "sad" and the speakers couldn't "kick it" and Laura values his opinion since he is the front man for the thrash metal band Sonic Death Monkey. Laura took the components back to the store and demanded her money back.Rob refused to let her return the equipment stating he had a signed contract.

Laura takes Rob to small claims court and you are the lucky judge assigned to the case. After reading the pleadings and hearing argument from both sides it is time to render your decision. Which party wins? What type of contract, if any, was created? May Rob enforce the terms of the contract?Could Laura enforce the terms of the contract? Must she return the stereo equipment? Is she out her $300 deposit or is she owed a refund?Must she continue to pay Rob until the balance is paid in full? Why or why not? What steps could Rob take to prevent such an incident from re-occurring in the future?Explain the legal basis and rational for your decision.
