Robert owns a pizzeria in Scottville and it's very famous. For 30 years, Robert's business has been a well known fixture within the community. Robert has employed so many people that many people in the town have worked there while in high school, college and beyond. Robert volunteers his time for local charities and has even donated around $100,000 for student scholarships. On May 1 the sauce Robert uses for his pizzas was recalled by the manufacture for having a bacteria. Robert found out about the recall on May 2. On May 3 Robert was due to cater a large luncheon benefiting community firefighters. The luncheon would provide his workers with much needed tips, his own pizzeria with much needed revenue and he was being counted on by the firefighters to provide lunch. Robert had read that only about 10% of people who consumed the recalled sauce got sick. Robert really wanted to call off the luncheon until he got better sauce but he didn't want his workers to go the weekend without tips and he didn't want to let his customers down. He went ahead with the luncheon. Out of 500 attendees 10 became ill, and 1 person went to the hospital.
1. Discuss "Corporate Social Responsibility " how did Robert utilize CSR with his business and his community?
2. What type of "ethical reasoning" did Robert use when making his decision? Could he have made a different decision?
3. Discuss "Utilitarianism and Kantian Ethics." What are these theories and how does it apply to our facts here? If Robert were defending his behavior do these theories help or hurt him? Can you think of some scenarios where Robert's type of behavior could be condoned?
4. Does the fact that only 10 out of 500 got sick to change your approach to whether Robert acted ethically or not? Would you have canceled the luncheon until a later date?
