In your technical department there are five people working. You are the coordinator and John is the manager. Terry, Kylie and Lin are software developers. Recently workplace has got few urgent projects and work is overloaded. Software developers make effort to complete their work even without taking any breaks in order to meet their targets and deadlines. Terry has a temperament issue and he is very sensitive. Even for minor matter he is getting very angry towards other team members. Probably he has some family issues which he has never spoken out. Lin is a newcomer and bit anxious and fearful when it comes to team meetings because he has some language barriers. He is from Asia. Kylie lost her mom recently due to corona virus infection in her aged care. She has been very sad and always find a way to isolate from others.

These situations have affected the work roles, their responsibilities and team outcomes to complete projects meeting deadlines. Your manager has asked you to address these situations intelligently using emotional intelligence approach.

Your Task

Prepare to address the situations and complete the following activities:

  1. Develop a plan to Identify and respond to above emotional expressions of the workplace and include in your plan:
    1. Workplace objectives for promoting emotional intelligence
    2. emotional responses of co-workers to address.
    3. emotional stressors in the workplace
    4. methods for responding to emotional stressors in the workplace
    5. techniques to apply for the emotions of others when making decisions
    6. opportunities for others to express their thoughts and feelings
    7. tasks for assisting others (i.e., to understand effect of personal behaviour and emotions on others in the workplace)

  1. Discuss with your manager (assessor) workplace policy and procedures when handling sensitive areas of information of work colleagues.
  2. Seek feedback from your team members (i.e., to identify and confirm methods for responding to emotional stressors in the workplace)
  3. Consult your manager (assessor) and other team members to identify improvement areas for emotional intelligence of you and others
  4. Apply the opportunities and tasks to improve emotional intelligence across the workplace promotingdevelopment of emotion intelligence in others.

Instructions

This part is a role-play where you must organise role-play settings as agreed and facilitated by your assessor for a consultation meeting including training room place, tables, chairs, a computer with Internet, papers, pens, and any other resources as required.

Details of the task being observed

You undertake the active part of the task participating and using oral communication skills in a consultation meeting with relevant manager.

Respond to the role-player with responses according to caser study information and task activity of the unit of competency. Assessor is to respond with accuracy and relevancy of application of emotional intelligence.

Timing for the role-play:

10 - 15 minutes per candidate plus your assessor will decide any additional time required based on your participation behaviour and ability to perform

Skills in this assessment are demonstrated by the candidate and observed by assessor in a simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to:
