Gaius, his gladiator Flamma and the swordsman Silky start tolive in the gladiator school next to the villa after the villa’ssale to Lentulus. Flamma trains everyday with Silky while a contentGaius watches over them. Gaius continues to pay Silky 100 sesteriusa month for his services.

One day Gaius, content with Flamma’s progress, tells Flammathat he always grants his gladiators their freedom once they have20 wins under their belts. Flamma responds by saying that he willhave 20 wins in 20 days as it is impossible for him to lose afight. Silky, hearing the conversation, laughs atFlamma’s claims and ridicules him. As a response, Flammapromises Silky everything he had won as a result of all his fightsif he loses a match before winning the 20th. Flamma wins 19consecutive fights but loses the 20th. Nonetheless, Gaiusgrants the rudis (a wooden sword) to Flamma as a symbol of hisfreedom. When Silky asks for the winnings that Flamma had promisedhim, a now freed Flamma tells him that he does not owe him anythingand will not pay a dime.

But Flamma really has loads of money and for years had hiseye on Atia in secret. He then goes on to offer Lentulus 100,000sesterius for his ex-master Gaius’s villa as a gift to Atia,however Lentulus outright rejects the offer. An enraged Flammabeats up Lentulus and putting him in a necklock, makes him sign thesales agreement by brute force. A month later Atia and Flamma getmarried and move in to their newly purchased villa.
