Rose is a 62-year-old, chronically-ill woman. She has been invited by her physician to participate in a clinical trial of a new drug against the disease she has been suffering from. Rose rejects the invitation, arguing that she is too tired fighting against the disease and that she does not want to be involved in another burdensome procedure that may bring no benefits to her. However, two days later, Rose comes to the physician and says that she has changed her mind and she agrees to become a subject of the trial. When questioned about why she decided to participate, she replies that she has spoken with her children and they convinced her that she should not "give up". Rose further comments that "I simply can't do this to my children. They love me so much. I have to be strong for them. They told me that I would be an egoist if I did not take this chance. I´m their mother and I have certain obligations toward them."
