A common symptom of otitis media in young children is a prolonged presence of fluid in the middle ear, known as middle- ear infusion (MED). The presence of fluid may result in hearing loss or interfere with learning skills. One study looked at the duration (in days) of middle ear infusion for breast-fed babies and bottle-fed babies to see if breast-fed babies have a shorter duration. At study of 13 pairs of babies is set up, where the babies are matched on a one-to-one basis according to age, gender, socioeconomic status and type of medications taken. One member of each pair is breast-fed and the other member bottle-fed. Despite the wide-ranging observations, tests of normality revealed that Duration of Middle-Ear Infusion does follow a normal distribution.
