With my research topic for my proposed study for this course in mind, I read about the different types of complex mixed methods designs included in Creswell and Plano Clark (2018) and went back and forth between the mixed methods experimental study design and the mixed methods case study design. Both seemed as though they could be employed to study my topic, but ultimately, I felt as though the most appropriate approach was the mixed methods case study design. Using this design would allow me to thoroughly develop a rich understanding of the classes receiving each of the two service delivery models. I would be able to report on the attitudes, feelings and experiences of the students and teachers and the quantitative data regarding their performance. Threats to validity specific to the mixed methods case study design are not adequately defining the case, failing to clearly articulate each case and the rationale for each, failing to integrate the results of quantitative and qualitative measures, and failing to make meaningful cross-case comparisons. Understanding these threats to validity is helpful in developing the design of the study in order to avoid these errors before the occur. In order to avoid an inadequate defining of each case, it will be necessary to describe and specify the bounding of each case. This will not be difficult; however, it will be incredibly important for the purposes of the study. Each case in this study will be bounded by time (one specific trimester during 10th grade), place (biology classroom with one biology teacher) and the cases will be distinct in their circumstances in that one of the cases will be bounded by having the learning support teacher provide support in the classroom while the other case will have the learning support teacher providing support in a resource room. Providing the rationale for each case is also not difficult, but very important. In this case the goal is to better understand the experiences of students who receive learning support in the classroom and in the resource room - how it affects their performance, attitudes, openness, willingness to receive support, and overall learning and retention of information. While the first two threats are, in my opinion, easily mitigated, the third is more challenging in my opinion - although, if I succeed in eliminating the third threat, I believe it will naturally make the fourth less of a challenge. Integrating the quantitative and qualitative data, rather than reporting each separately, is both the exciting and challenging task for me. I think that analyzing each of the sets of data thoroughly first and then comparing them will lead to natural ways in which the data can be combined and reported on together. In turn, I believe this will make it easier to meaningfully compare the two cases to each other, identifying trends and patterns between the two
