Sabermetrics is the analysis of baseball statistics that measure what goes in a baseball game. Baseball statisticians, aka sabermetricians, collect data about players' or even a teams' performance, strategies in certain situations or conditions on the field during a game, as well as other aspects of the game. This first Discussion is intended to demonstrate just how widespread the use of statistics is today and how important statistics is to us personally and to our work. I highly recommend a book entitled, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, written by Michael Lewis, that later became a very successful movie and exposed us to statistical techniques now universally used in all sports, whether at professional or amateur levels.
