Salon Deluxe provides nail care for its clients using the latest technology from Europe. The typical process works as follows: During the peak demand hours of 10 A.M. to 1 P.M., customers arrive, one at a time, at the salon every 5 minutes (on average, according to an exponential distribution). Each customer gets into a line (with a capacity of 10 people). After waiting in line, each customer discusses what they need with the receptionist. Typically, 30% of the customers want to get a pedicure (only), 35% want to get a manicure (only), and 35% want both a manicure and pedicure. Those who want to do both get the manicure first. The time of this discussion can be approximated by a normal distribution with a mean of 1 minute and a standard deviation of 0.1 minutes. The receptionist gives each customer a number and shows them where to sit (there is plenty of room for customers to sit and wait). The amount of time for a nail technician to perform a manicure can be approximated by a normal distribution with a mean of 8 minutes and a standard deviation of 1 minute. The amount of time for a nail technician to perform a pedicure can be approximated by a normal distribution with a mean of 10 minutes and a standard deviation of 2 minutes. Using SimQuick, construct a simulation model of this system. Note that your model will need two Decision Points. The first separates the customers into those that only want a pedicure and the rest. The second separates the people who only want a manicure from the people who want a manicure and a pedicure. Run at least 50 trials (number of simulations) and report the following statistics: Average number of customers served, average time spent in each line, and average total throughput time for each customer type (i.e., total time spent in the system, on average, for each of the three customer categories described above). As you examine the results, do any numbers "jump out" at you? If you were a customer of Salon Deluxe, would you be satisfied with your service? What changes, if any, would you recommend?
