Sandra Gordon, an associate with your law firm, graduated from law school one year ago. Tim Benton, a senior partner of the firm, had originally placed Sandra in the family law department of the firm because of Sandras experience with the family law clinic for legal aid clients that was run by her law school. Tim now believes Sandra should gain experience in other departments and has asked Sandra to work in the real estate department. Sandra loves family law and has neither experience nor interest in real estate; however, she wants to continue to work for this law firm, so she grudgingly accepts the reassignment.
You have been asked to work with Sandra as well as with your present supervising attorney. This morning Sandra met with a client who just purchased a small warehouse and wants a lease drafted for use with future lessees. Sandra hands you a copy of a retail center percentage lease and a legal pad on which Sandra has scratched a few notes, including the name of the client, the address of the warehouse, the size of the warehouse units, the required deposits, and the average monthly rent. She asks you to copy the retail lease verbatim and just insert the information on the legal pad. You inform Sandra that you have several warehouse leases on file that would be more appropriate than the retail center percentage lease. Sandra very sharply insists that you follow her instructions. You know that Sandras inexperience will become apparent to the client if you follow her instructions and that the document will not best serve the clients needs. What should you do?
