Scenario 1

Within the organisation, you have been appointed as a team leader for completing a task/project.

You work at Gelos Enterprises, one of the world's leading business operations organisations. Excellence through continuous innovation, is the driving force behind all the services provided at Gelos.

Stella, the head of marketing has approached you regarding an opportunity to lead the team responsible for the upcoming exhibition stand that Gelos are holding at the upcoming B2B Expo.

She would like you to commence the planning stage with the team by completing Gelos Enterprises' Team Development Plan template.

Stella meets with you on Skype as she works remotely and provides the following information:

  • The exhibition is being held in six months' time over two days and will feature over 150 exhibitors who provide solutions to improve, grow and develop businesses.
  • At this stage, the site for the B2B Expo for Gelos Enterprises has not been booked.
  • Rashaad, the founder of Gelos Enterprises has identified this exhibition as a major avenue to meet this year's key performance indicator (KPI) to increase the client portfolio and has agreed to allocate 60% of this year's marketing budget towards the exhibition. However, Rashaad expects to see at least a 6% increase in the client portfolio from the exhibition.
  • Stella and Rashaad have hand-picked your team from the Gelos Enterprises staff. Your team will comprise of Imran (Marketing & Research Coordinator), Charlie (Promotions Assistant), Mayleen (Brand Coordinator), Morgan (Customer Insight Coordinator), and Waratah (Senior Data Analyst).
  • Stella has requested that once you complete the Team Development Plan, you need to share it with her, and Rashaad for further review and approval.

Task 1

You need to undertake a role play with your peers/family members according to scenario 1 for your organisation.

You will need to provide a script.

The outcome of this role play is a Team Development Plan with Part 1 complete.

Scenario 2

By this stage you have completed and submitted the Team Development Plan to management for review. However, there are some issues that you need to sort out.

Congratulations!

Stella was extremely impressed with the Team Development Plan you created in scenario 1 and is interested to hear how you will now move forward with the team.

Background

The team has made it through the first two months of the project. The planning phase is complete, and your team is just embarking on the 'norming' stage.

All your team members are completing their tasks however you have recently discovered the following about your team members:

  • Mark - Management.
  • Rashaad - Team leader.
  • Imran - likes to be heard, particularly good at his tasks, often leads the discussion off track.
  • Charlie - the joker of the group, enthusiastic about tasks, goes at a million miles an hour, can envision the 'big picture.'
  • Mayleen - particularly good at her job but keeps to herself and does not contribute anything extra to the team.
  • Morgan - administration expert, extremely organised.
  • Waratah - expert knowledge but is hard to get a hold of.

Whilst the team does work well together, you have noticed the following during team meetings as well as general communication during the project so far.

  • Communication is a constant challenge - a few team members prefer to work remotely on their own time schedule. At this point in time, not all of the team members have met face to face.
  • At the last meeting, the team raised that they had still not heard from management about the final approval for the uniform to be worn at the expo. The initial request was sent to management about 3 weeks ago. Mark from Management informs the team that the order for the uniforms needs to be placed in the next 2 weeks if they are to arrive in time for the expo.
  • Team leader Rashaad sent you an email recently and mentioned that he is worried about the budget for the project. He mentioned that there were some excellent ideas for the expo, but some of them would cost too much.
  • Just this morning, Stella mentioned to you that Imran raised an invoice for an item that had not been discussed or approved by the team.

Task2

The outcome of this role play is a resolution of the issues highlighted in the scenario. You will also demonstrate your skills in leading and managing a team. Please provide a script.

You will provide this information in the relevant sections (Part 2) of the Team Development Plan template.
