Scenario 1 . You are the new HR Advisor fora growing Melbourne-based burgerchain, Burger N' Bite. The chain has grown from one family owned-and-run store to five managed stores, in the last 12 months. Across the five stores the chain now employs forty kitchen staff, most of which are employed on a casual basis and are between fifteen to seventeen years of age. The Managing Director has just called you into an emergency meeting with one of the new store managers, who explains the company has a problem on its hands. The previous night, two kitchen staff were tasked with cleaning down the grills at the end of their shift. They did this using the cleaning products provided, which include an acid for removing the grease build-up on the grill plate. This all went smoothly, but once they were finished, they decided to have a competition to see which of them could flip a cooked meat patty up from the grill and catch it in their mouth before eating it. Unfortunately, one of them swallowed the meat patty and because there was residual acid left on the grill from it being cleaned down, they now had internal injuries. Upon questioning, the Store Manager reveals that it was the first shift for the worker who had swallowed the acid-laced burger. When asked about what training the injured worker had received prior to starting work, the Store Manager admitted he had left it to the other kitchen staff to "show the new worker the ropes", as he was too busy covering the register due to staff shortages. Defensively, the Store Manager tells you and the Managing Director, 'lt's not the first time I've had to let the other kitchen staff train a new employee, it's happened plenty of times before, and it's never been a problem. ...anyway, there is a poster on the wall in the kitchen warning the staff about the dangers of our cleaning products and telling them to wear gloves and masks when using them. Not my fault they ignore it. The kid is to blame for this; it's his own fault, not mine. He should have known better. So, before you start blaming this on me, just remember I've only been here a month myself and I've been left to my own devices. No induction, no policy manual, no nothing!'
