The City of Los Angeles passes a law giving police officers the ability to inspect hotel registration records without advance notice and any hotel that does not comply with such a request from a Los Angeles police officer could face a $1,000 fine and a six-month prison term for the hotel operator. Your hotel receives such a demand from a police officer. You ask the officer to see the warrant for the request, but they do not have one. You inform your boss, and your boss tells you not to comply that the request violates the hotels Fourth Amendment rights. Several months later, the hotel receives notice that they are fined $1,000 and that there is a warrant out for the hotel owners arrest for non-compliance with the request. The owner and hotel are subject to a criminal jury trial where the government is seeking both the fine from the hotel and six months imprisonment of the hotel owner.
