Scenario 2 - Ava Ava (23 months) is new to the service and hasn't been in childcare before. To help Ava settle the educators ask her family what Ava likes to do. Ava's dad explains that Ava loves to look in the mirror, particularly at her teeth. On Monday morning Ava, did not want to leave her mum, her mum was trying to put her on the ground but Ava wouldn't let go. One of the educators approached and could see Ava's mum was getting upset. She asked she wanted her to take Ava, Ava's mum nodded. The educator gave Ava a big cuddle, told her it was okay and said let's go to the window and wave goodbye to mum. Later that day the educators decided to set up a big mirror for Ava to look at herself. The next day when Ava arrived, the educator approached as soon as she could see both Ava and her mum looked upset. Look Ava, we have a big mirror today said the educator, pointing at the mirror. Ava smiled and her mum took her over to the mirror. The educator walked over and sat next to Ava on the floor, Ava's mum said goodbye and walked away. Ava started to get upset but the educator distracted Ava by pulling funny faces in the mirror and encouraged Ava to do the same.
