Question
Scenario A new company is now being established in the city. As new project are being implemented, the administration is intending to recruit new employees.
Scenario
A new company is now being established in the city. As new project are being implemented, the administration is intending to recruit new employees.
The network is made of 3 switches (S1, S2 and S3) and one router (R1) connected as follows:
·
· S2 is connected to S3 via a Fast Ethernet link
· R1 is connected to S2 via a Fast Ethernet link interface and to the Internet via a WAN Serial link.
Switches S1 and S3 are 2960-24TT series switch; each of these switches has 24 Fast Ethernet ports and 2 Giga Ethernet ports. While S2 is an old 2950-24 series switch; it has only 24 Fast Ethernet ports. Router R1 is a 1941 series router that has 2 Giga Ethernet interfaces and 2 Serial interfaces.
The company is producing 3D programs are sold nationwide. These 3D programs are generating lot of traffic within the company network as the employees need to access these programs from servers.
The PCs (of the employees) and servers are distributed equally between switches S1 and S3.As for switch S2, it does not hold any PC or Server.
NB: Port Speeds
· Fast Ethernet = 100Mbps
· Giga Ethernet = 1000Mbps = 1Gbps
Questions
A. Open a packet tracer file and connect the devices (switches and router) as mentioned in the scenario. Include a screen shot of the network design you have done. (6 marks)
To connect the router to the internet use a cloud from the "WAN Emulation" section found in the icon toolbar at the bottom left hand corner of the packet tracer program.
The name and the model labels of each device should appear. Furthermore, the name of each device should be as follow:
· S1_FName_XXXXXX_Fa20 (for switch S1)
· S2_FName_XXXXXX_Fa20 (for switch S2)
· S3_FName_XXXXXX_Fa20 (for switch S3)
· R1_FName_XXXXXX_Fa20 (for the router)
Example: if your ID ends with 123456 and your name is Ziad Moustafa then the device name will be S1_Ziad_123456_Fa20 (for the switch S1)
NB: in case the name and model labels are not appearing under the devices in packet tracer, click on the option tab in the toolbar and select preferences. Then select the show device model labels and show device name labels.
NB2: you need to add a HWIC-2T module to the router for the serial interfaces.
B. Each time a new employee is being added to the network the IT manager is assigning manually, to the PC of this new employee, an IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS. However, from time to time an IP conflict occurs as this IP address was either allocated to another PC or Server. Such an incident is disrupting the work of the company.
What can be done to avoid such incidents? (4 marks)
NB: you need to provide details in your answer.
C. The management has noted that the actual network design is causing lot of congestions due to the large amount of traffic exchanged between the PCs and the servers located on S1 and S2. They made a study and noticed that the traffic that should flow between S1 and S3 is around 720Mb/s.
You are asked to find a solution to this problem, so the management gave you some guidance for you to follow:
· It is not possible to modify the actual design of the LAN for financial reasons
(S1 is connected to S2 and S2 is connected to S3);
· PCs (of the employees) and servers cannot be connected to S2;
· PCs and servers are distributed equally between switches S1 and S3
Finally the solution should be economical as the budget is limited; nevertheless, if justified, there is a possibility to allocate a budget to buy one new switch. (The type of the switch and the reason need to be mentioned)
