Scenario:A nurse hypothesized that mothers who received counseling concerning their reactions to their children's illnesses would react more appropriately when greeting their hospitalized children for the first time than wouldmothers who received no counseling. Two groups of mothers wereselected to participate in the study. In one group each mother met with astaff psychologist and the attending nurse. The nature of the child's illnesswas explained, and the mother was counseled concerning her reactions tothe illness. The second group of mothers received no such counseling andserved as the control group. A nurse then observed the initial encounterbetween each mother and child and assigned a greeting behavior ratingscore (on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 most desirable). The question theresearcher wished to answer was, "Are the greeting behavior ratingshigher, on the average, for the counseled group than for the group whoreceived no counseling?"
