Email from Business Operations Manager

Subject: Manage the business risk process

Hello,

The directors are reviewing the current situation affecting the organisation. Could you take a lead role and manage the risk process? You'll need to establish the current risk context, identify and analyse potential risks and then choose and implement a treatment plan. You will also need to conduct a stakeholder analysis and consult with BizOps personnel and other relevant stakeholders. Make sure you follow our policy and procedures on risk management, and use the templates I've included to document the process. Read the background information below to learn more about the situation, and what's required. This will all need to be done in the next four weeks!

Regards, Chang Lin Business Operations Manager

Background

BizOps Enterprises started as a small company and has grown into a national retail business, specialising in a range of exclusive products. It now has more than 150 retail, online and phone order outlets across Australia.

Business has been good, but management is always aware of potential risks, especially in the past three months. Over this period, some significant international, national and organisational incidents have affected the business.

On the international front:

  • Five key suppliers of our top-selling range of products have received global condemnation. They have used toxic or banned chemicals in their products, and polluted the environment through unsustainable production methods.

On the national front:

  • Australian consumers are spending less. They seem to be worried about the uncertain global financial situation, and there are also rumours of government tax increases. Both of these factors will probably decrease household disposable incomes.

Within the organisation:

  • There's been an increase in complaints from customers about online purchasing system problems, and goods not being delivered on time. Some customers believe that their confidential information is being passed on to other companies. Customers have complained that the company website and online purchasing links are 'glitchy'.
  • Staff morale has dropped. There are many conflicts between staff, and complaints about hours worked and lack of training.
  • Information systems and warehousing/logistics systems are more than 10 years old.
