SCENARIO: You are a Project Manager for a Computer Software Integration Company managing the acquisition and amalgamation of three other companies. The project is scheduled for 10 months and must be finished within that time frame. You are currently putting together an estimate and list of tasks for your first meeting with the VP of Operations. 1. Using the follow tasks, complete an estimate for each using the three-point estimating technique: o P ML Duration Task Purchase co-location building Complete Process Analysis at Company 1,2 and 3 Team building exercise and retreat Create new salary, benefits and training grid Value Stream Mapping Session to join processes Team creative improvement session Implement deep dive testing of new processes Amalgamation working session Merger update and marketing completion 2. Using the parametric estimating technique, a similar project happened at another organization. This time your sessions have more teams and more sessions. SCENARIO: One month ago, a Business Analyst worked with another organization similar to yours and completed a value stream mapping session with three departments looking at the processes they complete on a regular basis. Session 1 took 4 to complete working at it for 5 hours per day. Each department had a similar first session. Sessions two and three varied for the three departments as some of the processes had more steps than others. On average the sessions took 5 hours to complete. a) Calculate the total time it took for all three departments to have three sessions based on the information above. b) Secondly, create an estimate for question 2 using the parametric estimating technique for your organizations value stream mapping sessions based on the above for your 8 groups having 7 sessions with the same business analyst. 3. Knowing your team has some very experienced and long-time employees completing some of the work and a group of new people to the company in the sessions noted above. Create an estimate for the duration of time it will take for both to include in your report to the VP. SCENARIO: When completing your estimate for the time it will take to complete the process analysis task on your project, you need to take into consideration the variations at each company with their staff experience and skills, union regulations and mistakes/misunderstandings and potential rework. Using the lecture and specifically the "Factors that influence duration and the critical path a. create an estimate using the analogous method for estimating the time it will take for company 2&3 to complete the process analysis of one process. b. Summarize how you came to the duration using specific terminology for the factors you considered. c. Calculate the cost for resources for company 1 using the rates and time to complete this process one month ago d. Estimate the cost for company 2&3 for resources based on the rates for company 1 and the total hours to complete this portion of the project Company 1- time for completing analysis of the process 1 month ago = 15 hours 3 employees with 5 -8 years experience using process *$42/hr 15 employees with 1-year experience *$30/hr 7 employees with 3 months experience $20/hr Brand new technology to automate processes Estimate Company 2 completing the process with the following in mind. 10 employees with 5 -8 years experience using process 4 employees with 1-year experience 6 employees with 3 months experience Union regulations - no overtime allowed and the schedule for office time is Tuesday- Thursday maximum 9 hours per day Estimate Company 3 completing the same process analysis with the following in mind. 16 employees with 5-8 years experience using process 9 employees with 1-year experience 2 employees with 3 months experience 9 employees do not speak English 4. SCENARIO: On top of the amalgamation, currently your company is going through a culture assessment and change will also be working alongside a Business Analyst whose scope is to look for areas of improvement, inefficiency and revenue generating opportunities. The Business Analyst wants to understand how the schedule came together, you offer to show them how you made the schedule by first creating a network diagram for all of the tasks and dependencies. This person has never seen this done before and thinks you are amazing for knowing how to do this and showing them. You share this information with the BA to complete the exercise as you go through it with them. a) Using a blank sheet of paper, create a rough draft of the network diagram using only the letters above to ensure there are no unnecessary crossovers. b) Create a network diagram using the network methodology and insert the above tasks and durations. c) Find the duration of the project and critical path by completing a forward and backward pass. d) Highlight the critical path by circling the tasks that are on the critical path and connect them with a line. e) Write the duration of the project below the network diagram Below is the chart for a selection of high-level activities for the building this network diagram to inform the schedule. Using the answers for your estimate from question 1 enter the duration for each task. Predecesser Duration (Days) Task Purchase co-location building Complete Process Analysis at Company 1,2 and 3 Team building exercise and retreat Create new salary, benefits and training grid Value Stream Mapping Session to join processes Team creative improvement session Implement deep dive testing of new processes Amalgamation working session Merger update and marketing completion Activity B D E F G H In order to enter the predecessor for each task, you need to confirm the dependencies and then write them in the predecessor box to finish your chart for the rough network diagram and cpm diagram. Task Purchase co-location building Complete Process Analysis at Company 1,2 and 3 Team building exercise and retreat Create new salary, benefits and training grid Value Stream Mapping Session to join processes Team creative improvement session Implement deep dive testing of new processes Amalgamation working session Merger update and marketing completion Starts as the first task but cannot finish until after task G is completed, it is also connected to task B and Discretionary start according to the experts but must finish before task D, F and H start Must finish before task E can start and also starts at the same time as task F Starts after finishes Must start before task G can start Starts after task B finishes and connects to task H Starts after F This task can only start after both task F and G finish External factors influence this task and the completion is out of the project teams' control and this task starts after task H finishes and is the last task Using the dependency types and reasons, enter the predecessors for each activity and ensure all of the tasks flow forward to the end and none are left dangling or keep going in circles. Predecessor Duration Task Purchase co-location building Complete Process Analysis at Company 1,2 and 3 Team building exercise and retreat Create new salary, benefits and training grid Value Stream Mapping Session to join processes Team creative improvement session Implement deep dive testing of new processes Amalgamation working session Merger update and marketing completion Activity A B D E F G H 1 Below, draw the rough draft network diagram, then complete a CPM using the nodes, durations and forward and backward pass. 5. Finally, after entering all of the durations for each task using the rates for each employee in company 1 create your estimate for the total cost of the project resources using the rates and paying every employee for each hour worked based on their rates
