Scenario:

You are employed as an engineer at B&D Manufacturing Co. You are in charge of the quality control program. Two years ago, B&D began marketing a coffee maker with a unique design and attractive appearance that really appealed to consumers. The sales took off and became not only the company’s top seller, it now produces 70% of B&D’s annual profits. Last month a B&D coffee maker overheated and caught fire causing damage to the consumer’s kitchen and smoke damage throughout the house. The vice president told you he thought this was due to a manufacturing defect and that quality control needed to find out what went wrong. You carefully reviewed all the manufacturing processes and specifications. It appeared that B&D manufactured the coffee maker properly according to the engineering design and specifications. This month there are five more reports of B&D coffee makers overheating and causing fires. The CEO called a meeting of the production manager, the design team, marketing manager, and you, the quality control manager. It is determined that a design defect is causing the overheating. It turns out that the design team knew overheating was a possibility, but putting more insulation and larger wires would change the design that consumers love. The design team says they felt that only one in 1,000 coffee makers sold has caught fire. The annual cost of paying for fire damage is estimated at about 1% of sales. Marketing does not want to change the design. They claim changing the design could cost 40 to 55% of sales, cutting the sales representatives' income proportionately. They say the company is ahead by keeping the design the same. The CEO says the company has to decide how to address the situation, and what to do to. A stockholders’ meeting is scheduled next month and she wants to put a positive spin on this situation.
