Scope Management and Health Checks

Your brother-in-law is about to submit a scope statement to the town council for the July 4th parade and picnic he has volunteered to project manage. Your town has about 6,000 households, and this is the first time the town council has given tentative approval for the parade and picnic. The council president thinks that about $1,500 can be allocated for the event. Since your brother-in-law knows you are taking a project management class, he has asked that you perform a review; however, you are not sure if you need to perform an audit or a health check. Share your thoughts about whether you would perform an audit or a health check and describe your rationale.

A substantive initial post answers the question presented completely and/or asks a thoughtful question pertaining to the topic. Be sure your post is unique. Do not repeat what other students have said.

Substantive peer responses ask thoughtful questions pertaining to the topic, and/or answer a question (in detail) posted by another student or the instructor. Note: The following are not examples of substantive contributions:

  • Thanking, agreeing with, or complimenting a classmate.

Class,

A project scope statement is used to define the end result of a project. Its purpose is to define as clearly as possible what the project will deliver to the customer. It is essential to include what is in and out of scope when writing a scope statement and while doing this you want to consider what questions the scope statement should answer.Project scopes are designed to identify the following items for a project: the what and the why of the project, the key objectives, the statement of work, major deliverables, key milestones, identify major constraints and list any key exclusions.

A project statement scope should answer particular basic questions. When delivered, there should be a clear and concise vision and purpose of the project itself. A few to name are:

  1. What are the goals and vision of the project?
  2. What basic resources are required or needed to perform the project?
  3. Who will be the project lead and or manager or head?
  4. Is there a specific timeline or deadline that the project needs to be completed by?

5. Define the problem statement of the project in detail.

Basically, the scope statement needs to speak to what you're setting out to accomplish and how you're going to accomplish it. The scope statement should provide the scope baseline, WBS, RAM, and the management plan. Within the scope statement you should be able to tell stakeholders what the deliverables are, and what they will cost to deliver (Pinto, J.K., 2016, p.144). Another way of looking at the scope statement is that it provides you with your boundaries for your project and prevents scope creep or at least helps you to avoid it and keep the project on track. It gives you something to point back to when the scope veers off track.

Let us practice the scope statement.
