How did you make sure you had considered safety and hygiene when completing this training?

You should identify that they checked the area for hazards, which may include those related to trips, slips and falls, use of equipment and other resources, food safety issue etc. Hygiene issues may relate to the coachee's presentation and hygiene (for example, where dealing with customers or when dealing with food preparation or food handling activities), or hygiene of the area (is it clean, are equipment and utensils clean, are food items free of spoilage or contamination etc).

How did you describe the purpose of the coaching to the coachee?

You should identify that they explained this clearly and accurately, such as using language and terminology they could understand, providing any visual aids to support the explanation. The explanation should reflect the outcomes of the earlier discussion with the coachee and also the information they initially used to determine the need for coaching. The coachee should be encouraged to ask questions.

Describe how you used 'explanation' during the coaching.

You should identify that they used clear and accurate explanations, using language and terminology the coachee could understand, as well as any visual aids to support explanations. This may be accompanied with policies, procedures, charts, checklists, forms etc (depending on the topic) to support the information being provided.

Describe how you demonstrated the specific tasks or key skills.

For example, the coaching may have included set up and assembly of equipment, safe operating procedures, cleaning and sanitising surfaces and equipment, using computers or other technology, demonstrating communication skills, filling out paperwork/documentation etc.

How did the coachee respond to your demonstration? Explain how you checked that they understood what you had demonstrated, as well as your explanations.

Your information regarding the coachee's response should align with the tone of the feedback provided by the coachee at the end of the journal.

What procedures or requirements were applicable to the task/skills? Explain how you informed the coachee of these.

Could include safe work procedures, food safety procedures, customer service procedures, equipment use and maintenance procedures, cleaning procedures, specific work health and safety procedures, reporting and documentation procedures, file management procedures, money handling procedures, etc.

Explain how the coachee went when it was time for them to practise. How well do you think they absorbed the skills and knowledge you demonstrated? Explain your answer. What types of questions did the coachee ask, and why do you think they asked these questions (for example, was it because you had missed something in your demonstration or explanation, did the coachee not listen or watch carefully, were your explanations unclear, etc)?

Some coachees may have picked up the skills/task quickly and with little issue. Other coachees may have required multiple opportunities for practise and questioning.

What performance problems or difficulties were encountered during the coaching? What steps/strategies did you take to address them? Were you successful?

For example, the coachee did not put on the right PPE,
