Section: Full Name: The Period of a Pendulum Lab Introduction, Diagram, Graph & Explanation, APA References: Communication (14 Observations, Sample Calculations, Error Analysis: Thinking /10 MAKE A COPY OF THIS DOCUMENT AND USE IT TO FORMAT YOUR LAB. DELETE ALL BLUE INSTRUCTION TEXT BEFORE SUBMITTING (INCLUDING THIS LINE). Purpose: To discover the relationship between the length of a pendulum and the period of its swing. Materials: (1) string, (2) relatively heavy object with minimal air resistance, (3) something to fasten string to unmoving surface Introduction: [Comm. - 6 marks] Write a one page introduction for this lab using proper APA referencing using the guidelines of writing an experimental report. None of this introduction should be in first person! This introduction should be four or five paragraphs. Since we are doing this for the first time, here are some guidelines and reminders: . Paragraph 1: Introduce what the experiment is and what you are going to do in your own words. Here are some guidelines for this first paragraph: Your own words; no citations 2-3 sentences State your purpose and a very brief, summarized, description of what you will be doing to accomplish it; not a step-by-step procedure. . Paragraph 2, 3, 4: Body paragraphs on research that you have done on this topic. Here are some things you should mention: What others have found Key equation for small angles History (Galileo, Huygens, etc.) Interesting facts Other related information to the labe and the swing of a pendulum Reminder: All of this information must come from reliable sources and must have in-text citations as well as a properly formatted APA Reference list at the end of the lab. None of Final paragraph: This should wrap things up for your reader by briefly explaining how you will be accomplishing your goal in this lab. Here are some guidelines for the last paragraph: Your own words; no citations 2-3 sentences3 Should be from the point of view that you still have not conducted the lab; it is not stating conclusions of the lab. 3 Do not start with uIn conclusion...\" because you are not actually concluding anything. 3 Some ideas to talk about: what methods you will be using to draw conclusions. the number of measurements and trials you will be doing, etc. Diagram: [Comm - 1 mark] Provide a labelled diagram of the setup of your experiment. This may be a drawing. a picture that you have taken. or even a diagram that you nd online {cite sources}. Observations: ['l'hink. - 2 marks] Complete the table below based on your observations. Do your best to reduce error when performing your experiment. The title has been provided for you. Important note: Wh en performing the experiment. be sure to drop the pendulum from the exact same angle each time. This is a control variable. F'erhaps cut out a wedge of paper or cardboard that will help you set the pendulum to the same angle each time. This should be included in your diagram. Table'l: Data collected for the length of a pendulum and the period of its swing. Length of Square root of the Pend ulum Length L T no.5 {m} is} (made) [+f ] [hfChoose error value based on maximum difference] Sample Calculations ['l'hink. - 2 marks] Provide one sample calculation for each of the two columns that require it above. A} 3} Graph: [Comm. - 5 marks] Plot a graph of the data using Google Sheets. Note that Length L is your independent variable and Average Period T is your dependent variable. Obviously, this would typically mean that Length L would be on the rutaxis and Average Period T would be on the yaxis. Unfortunately1 Google Sheets is incapable of plotting the graph that matches this relationship. In order to graph the data in such a way that Google Sheets can recognize bettec we have to rearrange the equation so thatAverage Period T is on the :eaxis and Length L is on the yaxis. Please note that this does not mean that L is now the dependent variable and T is now the independent variable; we just have to manipulate the graph due to the limitations of Google Sheets. Please watch this video for a detailed explanation of how this will affect the equation that you will be researching and using. [You can even discuss this briefly in a single sentence of one of your body paragraphs in your introduction no citation necessary.) Show the graph for your data using the guidelines above and following all proper graphing conventions discussed in the Skills Booklet. [2 marks] Write a paragraph below the graph discussing what the graph is showing. [3 marks] Things to include can be found in the Lab Skills Booklet - State the equation that the software provides using proper variables 4- Explain what the coefcient means Comment on the R2-value and whether or not this is a good equation . If you need to show your work in some way, include it in an appendix, telling the reader to refer to it Error Analysis: [Think. - 6 marks] 1. Use your experimental equation and actual equation to calculate the value of g. Show your work. What is the percentage error compared to 9.8 m/s. How does the equation you found from the experiment compare with the theoretical equation found by others in your introduction? Discuss how close to the theory your experiment agrees or disagrees. [3 marks] Recall: Percentage Error = [Experimental Value - Actual Valuel x 100% Actual Value Or Percentage Error = [Experimental Equation - Theoretical Equation) x 100% Theoretical Equation 2. Comment on the errors in your measurements, and whether they are significant, large or small by doing a relative error (relative uncertainty) calculation. Make sure to discuss at least two (2) significant sources of error that may have caused the relative uncertainty and overall percentage error that you have calculuted (discuss their contribution to the error in the lab, if they are random or systematic, and show the relative uncertainty calculations below the paragraph). [3 marks] APA References: [Comm. - 2 marks]
