Select an organization of which you are a member or a formal organization which you are not a member. The organization can be a social, religious, student or a commercial organization. Directly contact with the organization and talk with the members/employees of the organization who might provide information about the motivational problems and the issues. At the end of the project, you should be able to relate motivational concepts and theories to this real world organization. There are some parts to the projects:

a. A general description of the organization (e.g., name, type of business, size, location, etc.): Write a one page description of the organization you selected. This description should include:

  • What the organization does (e.g. type, sector, mission, etc.)
  • How many members/employees are there in this organization (e.g. size of the organization, Global vs local)
  • What your role is in this organization if you are a member.

b. Interview Guide: Craft an interview guide that you will use to interview three to four members of the organization. These questions should focus on how these people view the organization and their motivational issues under consideration. It is good to clarify what each person's role is. You must have at least 5, but not more than 10 questions. You need to submit a copy of your interview questions in the appendix part of your project report.

c. A summary of the motivation problem(s) that this organization is/was experiencing: What is the main motivational issue of concern? Pick several issues that you can clearly describe (Examples: Is the reward system congruent with work expectations? Is there a negative motivational system in place? How do you get volunteers to share the burden in an organization? Do the employees perceive inequity with respect to distribution of rewards or experience justice?) Pick an issue that you can clearly describe. Ideally, at the end of the project, you should be able to identify antecedents and consequences surrounding behavior related to this issue.

d. Discussion: Use all the information you have collected and write a case analysis of the organization's motivational problem/s. In this analysis, you should i) Describe the motivational issue, ii) Give examples of how the issue plays out in the organization (from your experiences and/or from the interviews that you have conducted, iii) Relate these characteristics to relevant course material and your references, iv) Add a discussion of recommendations to handle the motivation problems. Discuss how you would fix the problem or motivate organizational members. These should be based on specific motivation theories.
