This article is to investigate the implications of self-referencing as well as the effect that self-referencing has on social cognition. Dr. Furr conducts a literature review on the topic of the self-reference effect, which refers to the phenomenon of improved memory encoding and retrieval when the subject matter in question refers to itself. He develops a theoretical model in which he proposes that self-referenced materials are processed more strongly than non-self-referenced materials, and that this stronger processing is mediated by self-labeling, self-schema, and self-concept. This model also proposes that non-self-referenced materials are processed more strongly than self-referenced materials. Dr. Furr then discusses the implications of the self-reference effect for social cognition, including the potential for self-referencing to influence the evaluation of stimuli with different emotional valence, to increase self-positivity, and to lead to greater memory encoding and retrieval for self-referenced stimuli.
