Selma Pinnacle is a 62 year old woman living in Marshfield. She has worked for a local marketing firm for the past 5 years. Last year, there was a takeover of the firm by another marketing firm. Since that time, the work environment has become more concerning to her. There are a number of new co-workers who are in their 20-30's and they frequently make comments to Selma that make her uncomfortable. Also, the new department manager appears to not be very friendly towards her, preferring some of the younger employees.
Last month, there was a new position posted, which would requires some additional training and would result in a significant increase in both pay and responsibility. When she went to the department manager to inquire about applying for the position, the department manager was not supportive. The department manager did not specifically say Selma could not apply for the position, butstated (in essence) that the additional training would be very expensive, might be too difficult for Selma, and that Selma will be "retiring fairly soon".
She is unsure about whether or not she is being harassed or whether the firm is discriminating against her.
Your task:
You are to find resources related to Ageism/Age Discrimination/Rights of Older People (you can take any approach you choose). Note, you are not writing a research paper on Ageism (at least not at this point, but [hint] SAVE YOUR RESEARCH, as we will draft a Memorandum about your research in Module 3), you are looking for the resources that you could use to draft such a paper.
Part 1: Describe in a paragraph or two, how you will begin your search. How will you select the "key words" that you might use?
What resources, databases, e-books, etc. might be valuable?
How do you plan to approach the research?
Part 2:
Find and list five resources, from at least three different formats (E-Books, Videos, Academic Journals, Databases-don't pick "Nexis Uni" as you know that is a resource), that you feel will be helpful in your research.
What prompted you to select those resources?
How do you think they will be useful in your research?
Part 3:
Review the resources you have selected. Depending on the length, you may read them or just skim the material.
Have you selected "primary" sources, "secondary" sources, or not sources of law at all? Note: we will discuss the researching of various sources throughout the course.
Please rank the materials you have selected.
You should consider the source of the material, whether it is "primary" or "secondary," whether it would be "mandatory" authority, "persuasive" authority or no authority at all.
