SEN700 Research Methodology Pass Task 3.1P: Identify and Collate References Overview This task is for you to identify and collate journal articles into an electronic reference manager (E.g., EndNote) on an engineering topic / problem of your interest. Submission details Submit the following file to OnTrack: A single PDF document with the required information identified as deliverables under the pass criteria using the template provided. Instructions Conduct a literature search on a self-proposed engineering topic and identify relevant articles that shows the nature and direction of work in that topic area / problem. This process must be done systematically by first identifying appropriate keywords and phrases that are relevant to your topic. You are expected to use Deakin Library Database searches and locate different resources including journals, patents, government manuals and reports. You can search industry and government reports for documents pertaining to standards (including Australian standards). Assessment will be based on your ability to seek information from a variety of credible sources (not just one) and locate relevant articles. What you need to do To pass this task you will need to have a think about a small, but substantial problem in an engineering area of interest to you. You should have an inquiring mind and undertake research and development. This goes beyond simply learning about how something works. You must investigate what problems exist and what work has happened so far to address those problems. As a practicing engineering you will be required to undertake many such research investigations before planning or implementing an engineering project. This task (and this unit) prepares you to have a critical mind and identify opportunities for improvement, by considering the depth and breadth of engineering work in the topic area / problem. Pass criteria A document that provides clear information about the topic under investigation: 1. Engineering topic, 2. Keywords, 3. Databases searched, 4. Full names of the corresponding author of 10 relevant peer-reviewed articles (journals, patents, government reports, industry standards), 5. Clear hyperlink to EndNote file that includes at least 10 relevant references (with direct links to the articles within the reference manager software), and 6. A written description of the process used to search for articles, including how articles were ultimately selected or rejected
