(b) In a single-effect evaporator (SEE), a solution of organic colloids in water enters as feed at 8%. The concentrated liquid coming out from SEE unit at 6500 kg/h has solid content of 45%. Steam is available at 120 C. A pressure of 0.1342 atm is to be maintained in the vapor space. The temperature and specific heat capacity of the feed solution is 52 C and 4.2 kJ/kg. C, respectively. The solution has a negligible elevation in boiling point rise. i. Sketch and label the SEE unit. Perform mass balance to obtain flowrates in feed and vapor streams in kg/h. (5 Marks) ii. Determine the temperature and enthalpy in vapor stream. Perform energy balance to obtain steam consumption in kg/h. (5 Marks) iii. Calculate the heating surface area required in m. The overall heat transfer coefficient can be taken as 2800 W/m.C. (4 Marks)
