Separation process is one of the most important operations in the chemical industry. The most used techniques are distillation and absorption. Designing an absorber and a distillation column is devoted to students to evaluate their understanding towards the learnt knowledge about designing the absorber and distillation column. Absorption Process A mixture of VOC (acetone) and air is fed into a column of absorption with an internal diameter kmol/m2, respectively. 0.1964mol fraction of acetone presents in air stream. The absorber operates at 16.8C and 1.007105Pa. Acetone is highly soluble in water, 98.2% of acetone successfully been removed. The solubility of a gas in a liquid can be expressed by Henry's law, in which the molar fraction of the gas in the liquid (x) is proportional to its partial pressure (P) by means of the Henry coefficients, dependent on temperature. Determine all the streams' flow rate and its composition of the designed absorber. All the information is required to be labelled in a sketch diagram. Distillation Process It is desired to separate an equimolar mixture of benzene and toluene into a top product containing 95mol% benzene and a bottom product containing 95mol% toluene. The distillation is to be carried out at atmospheric pressure. Use a total condenser. The reflux ratio is 1.28 . Feed conditions are flowing rate is 100kmol/h and the feed is saturated liquid. For the distillation column designing, accomplished the following tasks. - Compute the quantity and composition of distillate and bottom streams. - Compute the theoretical number of stages required for separation by McCabe Thiele Method and Fenske equation. - Predict minimum number of trays when reflux ratio is infinity. The following criteria must be included in the report. Describe the absorption and distillation process. The description should include related theory/ concept for the operations, the relationship between the essential parameters of the operation, the method used to design the columns that perform the absorption and distillation process. i. Sketch the detailed process. Highlight the column for the absorption and distillation processes with streams' details and targeted component's composition. ii. Set the most basic information that is needed to design the columns. iii. Apply any designing methods that are covered in the syllabus of EP208/ BEP2063 Mass Transfer course. iv. Set any allowed assumption or conditions before designing the column. v. Perform the necessary mathematical calculation required. vi. Plot the required graphs to solve the proposed processes
