The Privacy Act 1988 is one of the main pieces of legislation governing the use of computerised accounting systems.

1	Open and Transparent Management of Personal Information	This principle requires organizations to have a clear and up-to-date privacy policy.
2	Anonymity and Pseudonymity	Individuals must have the option of not identifying themselves, or of using a pseudonym.
3	Collection of Solicited Personal Information	This principle limits the collection of personal information to what is necessary for an organization's functions or activities.
4	Dealing with Unsolicited Personal Information	If an organization receives personal information it didn't solicit, it must determine whether it could have lawfully collected that information.
5	Notification of the Collection of Personal Information	Organizations must notify individuals about why their personal information is being collected, who it might be disclosed to, and other related matters.
6	Use or Disclosure of Personal Information	This principle outlines when an organization may use or disclose personal information.
7	Direct Marketing	An organization may only use or disclose personal information for direct marketing purposes if certain conditions are met.
8	Cross-Border Disclosure of Personal Information	Before an organization discloses personal information to an overseas recipient, certain steps must be taken.
9	Adoption, Use or Disclosure of Government Related Identifiers	This principle limits the adoption, use, and disclosure of government-related identifiers.
10	Quality of Personal Information	An organization must take steps to ensure the personal information it collects is accurate, up-to-date, and complete.
11	Security of Personal Information	This principle requires an organization to take steps to protect the personal information it holds.
12	Access to Personal Information	This principle gives individuals the right to access their personal information, subject to some exceptions.
13	Correction of Personal Information	This principle requires an organization to correct inaccurate personal information.
