Several years ago, Walmart (an American corporation) contracted with a company in Bangladesh to produce clothing. The legal requirements for building codes and worker safety are less strict in Bangladesh than in the United States, but the company's factory did not even meet the legal standards in its own country. In fact, the owners of the factory had bribed local officials to avoid fines or other legal consequences of not following the law. As a result, the factory was unsafe and caught fire, killing several factory workers and injuring others. Walmart responded by cutting business ties with the company, but also claimed that they were in no way responsible for the safety or working conditions of their business partners in other countries and did not have any duties toward those companies' employees. Would Aristotle agree with with Walmart? Would Kant? Why or why not?
