Although I was not a narcotics investigator, there were times when that unit would ask for assistance in executing warrants. I remember such a case where we "hit" an apartment with a search warrant for drugs. As I came through the door, I could not help but notice a child of about six years old sitting at the breakfast table. He would put his fingers into the bowl and pull out a cockroach, and then take a spoon full of cereal. He repeated this until he had finished eating, literally "flicking" the cockroaches across the room each time. As I searched his bedroom, the contents of his each dresser drawer would appear to "move" in unison when opened to the light. When I lifted his mattress to look at that space between the mattress and box spring, thousands of cockroaches scurried to the same beat. I spoke with a social worker who reminded me that the apartment was one of approximately 150 on the block and that cockroaches are a hazard of the poverty in that neighborhood.
