Shopify was founded in 2006 by Scott Lake, Tobias Lutke, and Daniel Weinand. They had started an online store for snowboarding equipment, but they couldnt find any easy-to-use e-commerce software. Lutke, a programmer by profession, decided to build one. The software was immediately successful and the three men realized they could sell this tool to other emerging small businesses to help eliminate the aggravation of running an online store. Retailers are able to use Shopify to manage all aspects of their stores, such as uploading products, customizing the design, accepting credit cards, and viewing incoming orders and completed sales. The platform developed by Shopify lets retailers quickly create their own online store without having the headaches or huge expense involved in either developing their own website or hiring someone else to build it for them. As of April 2014, Shopify now powers over 100,000 online retailers including large organizations such as General Electric, Amnesty International, CrossFit, and more. In December 2010, Shopify secured $7 million in funding, followed by $15 million in October 2011 and $100 million in December 2013. It is estimated that the company is now valued at $1 billion. In Canada, Shopify became Canadas first Internet startup since the dot-com crash in the year 2000 to reach a billion-dollar valuation. How did Shopify manage to do what other tech firms have not?
