ANDREW TODAY Andrew obeyed his terms and was successfully released from probation two months before his 18th birthday. Andrew is now 20 and studying psychology in college. He is an assistant manager at a video store, where he has worked for the past two years. He lives at home and reports that his relationship with his brother has improved. With their busy sched- ules, they hardly see each other. Andrew is a film buff, and when time allows he works with stained glass. His goal is to earn a doc- torate in psychology. Andrew represents the majority of kids who get a taste of what it's like to be in jail. Although it was a brief stay, the impact was great. Andrew was not a criminal or a teen with anti-social tenden- cies. He simply lost his temper and reacted. Like many who come before the court, a jolt of reality--that there are consequences for misbehavior-was all that was necessary to get his attention. Andrew will likely turn this experience into something useful as he works with future clients as a psychologist. FINAL THOUGHTS What is your reaction to the report Andrew wrote about jail? Are you surprised by any- thing he said? How do you handle conflicts with siblings or parents? What, if anything, would you like to change about the way conflicts are handled in your family? If your parents are divorced, how did that experience affect you? How do you deal with the feelings that come up? What are some appropriate ways to let off steam when you get angry? What are some things you might choose to not do when you lose your temper? Did You Know? Over 3 million kids are exposed each year to domestic violence in their homes. One million women each year, most between ages 16 and 24, and an average of 160,000 males each year, are victims of domestic violence (Department of Justice Study 2000).
