Should companies like McDonalds be held legally responsible for the impact their products have on the health of their consumers?
McDonalds and other companies should NOT be responsible for the impact of their products and the impact on the health of individuals. ALL companies have a responsibility to the public to ensure that their products are not harmful in any manner. McDonalds has been socially responsible in their actions to stop super-sizing food items. McDonalds offer many items in their menu, in addition to salads, however people opt for consuming those items with higher calories. Although McDonalds will no longer continue to super-size, some consumers will eat twice as much of the regular size. Individuals need to take more personal responsibility in eating a balanced diet and exercising. McDonalds is not to be blamed for decisions individuals make in their diets and personal choices. McDonalds is simply providing a service that consumers want, fast and convenient foods. The more foods are processed, then the more dangerous they are to consume. That is a known fact, yet Americans more than anyone else are willing to compromise because they rather have convenience and speed over a healthy, home-cooked meal. This leads families down the road toward obesity because kids are also more inactive today then they ever had been. Kids are having to spend more hours at school and spend more time indoors watching TV or on their video games, with minimum physical activity. Yet, parents opt to feeding them fast foods instead of a freshly home cooked meal that is less harmful to them. It is absurd to blame McDonalds for the choices we make for our children or ourselves in what we consume and feed our bodies.
Where do you think the line between personal responsibility and corporate social responsibility should be drawn?
I believe the line between personal responsibility and corporate social responsibility should be drawn when an individual chooses what is best for their intake/diet/ wellbeing. Corporations are being measured by the law as to what is good and bad for the consumption of a human and should obey the law. Corporations are socially responsible by providing eatable products and provide calorie intake accessible for consumers to be aware of what they are intaking based on what they are eating. Everyone has the control of how personally responsible they want to be.
Should the government pass laws that limit the ability of injured consumers to collect damages from businesses that have allegedly injured them? I personally do not believe this would be a good idea. There are so many irresponsible citizens that eat in such irresponsible ways and do absolutely nothing to take care of their bodies. No exercise, no healthy eating habits, etc. Business would face numerous lawsuits and those benefiting from the lawsuits would just continue doing the same and no changes to their way of consumption would be made. Businesses would be highly affected.
